Special effects are again a very obvious and important factor in the creation of any work, but I find it is underrated in animation since we assume that special effects aren’t needed since everything is already pretend, anyway. Voice acting is a severely underrated, and insanely difficult, thing to do, and seriously, nobody does it quite like these guys.

Vocal performance is knocked out of the park by every single performer, but my personal favorites are Mae Whitman as Katara, Dante Basco as Zuko, and Grey Griffin as Azula. (And I attached it, because it is so beautiful and definitely worth watching, even if you don’t know the show and have no context.) It is actually just very, very heartbreaking. Not only is the animation stunningly unreal, blue and red dancing together in an explosive way, but the accompanying music is what sets the tone for the scene – because it is not aggressive fight music. In terms of art direction, Avatar contains one of my favorite scenes in animation history: the last Agni Kai between Zuko and Azula in the finale of the show. Not only does it nail art direction (something super, super important in animation), but it gets everything else absolutely right, too: vocal performance, special effects, music, character development, script writing… the list goes on and on. Let’s start by talking about Avatar‘s insanely amazing lesson on storytelling. Not just that, but Avatar actually shows the profound power of telling stories through the eyes of children. It takes the title “children’s show,” something usually seen in a slightly derogatory way, and turns it on its head, destroying the idea that “for kids” means weaker, means not as emotional, means not as heavy.

Trust me, I know what you’re thinking: “Audrey! That’s a children’s show! You’re twenty years old! That’s in your favorite shows of all time?”Īvatar: The Last Airbender is legitimately a masterclass in creative art and storytelling, in every single way. In the last few months of my summer, I have been fervently rewatching one of my all-time favorite shows – Avatar: The Last Airbender.
